Every child deserves a safe place to come home to. Sadly, 37% of the Vietnamese population lives in temporary housing cobbled together from tarps, bamboo matting and wooden planks, with nothing more than damp earth for a floor. These unstable structures leave families vulnerable to harsh weather, especially during the rainy season when their homes can be flooded or destroyed by the downpours. Unsanitary housing also makes families particularly susceptible to illness.
Children of Vietnam keeps out the elements through our Housing Initiative, which provides clean, safe homes for destitute families living on the streets or in inadequate housing. Each new home is roughly 300 square feet and is composed of two rooms with plastered brick walls. The houses have painted concrete floors, lighting and sanitation facilities. COV’s Housing Initiative also adapts existing homes to make them accessible to handicapped family members.
